It is Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 release weekend and the Nerds are SO STOKED to see the last few chapters of this trilogy unfold!
GotG3 explores the aftermath of the events of Avengers: Endgame, which saw the Guardians of the Galaxy reunite and set off on new adventures.
Below are excerpts from the nerds on their initial thoughts and scores after seeing the movie Thursday night!
James:
Guardians of the Galaxy: vol 3 gives fans what they expect to see. Awesome soundtrack(check), funny(check), heart(check), great characters & development(check), fun(check)! Vol. 3 is darker than the previous installments and while that’s a welcome change from the Marvel formula, it seems forced and not organic. With moments I was unable to watch honestly. And one of the most disappointing use of a character in the MCU. That being said, we love the characters and James Gunns visual, action, and music direction gets it to a satisfying albeit safe ending. Wrapping up one of Marvels best trilogies.
Rating: 8/10
Britt:
Guardians Vol. 3 was a heartwarming send off for our favorite Marvel family that delivered all the 80s nostalgia. Rocket’s backstory was both touching and heartbreaking. The new characters were completely adorable, and the villain was a perfect tyrannical psychopath. The MVP, for me, was the team of incredibly talented digital artists whose work completely transported me to the most fantastical, colorful, bizarrely eugenic populated worlds beyond our familiar Midgard. However, it felt a bit safe and didn’t deliver on the epic, emotional send off that I was hoping for. The whole movie felt like an emotional tease, and the shallow, pretentious, idiotic portrayal of Adam Warlock robbed the film of moments that could have been more profound. Overall, it felt refreshingly familiar after a befuddled last phase, and reminded me of the MCU I love.
Score: 8/10
Mike:
James Gunn’s swan song for the MCU has A LOT of really great things going for it, but there were some misses. I felt emotionally wrecked with one specific plotline, and then emotionally teased in many other moments. The resolution with MOST of the characters worked, but some of them fell a little flat. The visuals were beautiful, The High Evolutionary was terrifying, the characters were incredible, soundtrack was great, it felt like a solid ending to the Guardians trilogy, but even better – it felt like we were back in the MCU magic.
Score: 8.5/10
Mario:
Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 3 did exactly what it promised to do. It tore at our heart strings, made us laugh one last time, and had us say goodbye to the heroes who have kept our galaxy safe since 2014. This was the first MCU film in a long time that hit me in the feels. I would even say a little too much but that’s just the genius of James Gunn. Nobody else can make a story of a talking raccoon and a tree in space work quite like Gunn. Some characters weren’t portrayed the way I would have liked but it didn’t take away from the film as a whole. I’m going to miss jamming to the oldies while going on space adventures with my movie friends, but who knows? Maybe we’ll meet again some day.
Score: 9/10
All of the weigh in really has me bittersweet. I’m looking forward to seeing it. But hesitant to feel all the feels. Aw heck! I’m totally embracing it. Thanks for sharing all your views and feels.
